We handle them every day. We fling them in jars and cling to them clumsily on the checkout counter, and hardly give them a second look as change. The noise of commerce is coins; the smallest unit of our lives of money. But what should we be if we have been underestimating them?

Suppose it is not only money in your pocket, but a little old companion, a little teacher, valuable timelessly. Since the antique bazaars of Lydia and the e-money of today, the notion of a coin has been burdened with implications of worth, decision making and even our humanity. We should take a closer look, but not its financial value, but at its unexpected wisdom.

Part 1: The Five Faces of COIN


COIN as Money: The Deal of Money.

This is its most ancient and useful meaning. Some time circa 600 BC in Lydia (modern Turkey), somebody had a radical thought: they could use a chicken to trade a sack of grain, or in turn they could use a sack of grain to trade a standardised amount of metal stamped with a lion-head. Faith was on the goods as opposed to the symbol.

   The Moral: Value is a group story. The reason why a coin works is because we all believe it works. It has no value in the copper and nickel but in the belief it symbolizes. It is this that teaches us the greatest things in our lives, trust, reputation, and love, are founded on shared agreements and common respect. They are valuable, since we all choose to respect them.

This transforms a noun into a verb, an object into a principle passively, into an act. It is a reminder that you should make your own luck rather than waiting till your ship arrives.


   The Exercise: What is that little coin you have been putting your head in the sand? The fifteen minute scroll of you? The art you have been wishing to know? The truth that you have been dodging? Name it, take it and invest.


COIN as Rounter of Truth: The Verity Revealer.

"Heads or tails?" We are playing a coin-flip at apparently 50/50. However, the magic really occurs after the flip. Through that transient, un-recognized, suspended knowledge, you will at times feel a sudden, unspoken wish it were so-and-so, instead of it being otherwise.

   The Pro Tip: It is not the coin that is deciding, it is the heart. It does not nearly matter the result. What you deeply desire is what you are told by that gleam of hope or terror. The coin is nothing but a reflection of your hunch.

COIN as Spiritual Sign: Between Heaven and Earth.

At the place where the material and the spiritual meet there are coins. Feng Shui coins that are bound with red piece of thread invite fortune and are a source of balance. The coin, in this case, is a medium, a means whereby the physical realm can be brought into harmony with some unknown laws of flow and harmony.

   The Teaching: Coins remind us that we are moving in two worlds at the same time, the temporal world of responsibility and resource, and the spiritual realm of purpose and spirit. Knowledge To discern what pertains to which sphere.

Pop Culture COIN: A Shadow and Soul Token.

Hidden economies and profound longings are frequent subjects in art, with coins representing them. A cult group, the Dresden Dolls, sang of a Coin Operated Boy, which is a metaphor of relationship that is transactional, longing of love that is predictable and controlled, but in the end, soulless.

Gold coins in a world of John Wick are not expended in stores. They are presented with respect to services in a shadow world the bench-cleaning of a world, the weapon-cleaning of a world, the passage-cleaning of a world. They are a code, honour, and life that does not follow traditional structures.

   The Orange Part: Coin-Pocket. Ask: What do you say you really trade in? Is it your time for money? I like your genuineness to give you permission? Your principles of conveniency? The coin turns out to be the element of the invisible transactions of our lives.


Part 2: Three Moneyed Life Lessons.


The Strength of Little and Regular Deposits.

No man becomes a millionaire off a dime. A penny saved and invested and compounded over decades, that? That's a different story. The coin is the one that teaches changes in a gradual way.

   Use It: Coins are your daily habits. Reading ten pages a day, saving a little, writing one paragraph, having a walk. On a case-by-case basis, they appear incidental. With time accumulating, they become knowledge, money, a completed book or health. Nothing can be despised but continue to mint it.


Everything Has Two Sides (and You Have to Be At Both of Them)

Heads and tails. Two sides, one coin. It is impossible to have one, without the other. It is a masterpiece of vision.

   Apply It: You will have to mentally flip the coin before you judge a situation, a person or conflict. What does the other side see? What experience do you not think about? The integrity is holding both sides of the coin and not exactly act on both of them.


Value Is Not Competitive.

A nickel is larger and heavier than a dime, but it has a value of two times that of a dime. Appearances are deceptive.

   Practice It: This silences our underestimating propensity. The silent work mate might be the most knowledgeable. The most radical concept is the one that is built out of the hare-brained. The kind gesture that is repeated might be more significant than the big single act. The real worth is not always the one that is disguised.
